Perfil sociodemográfico y clínico de adultos mayores con demencia en un hospital especializado en Quito-Ecuador

Introducción: Las demencias causan discapacidad y su prevalencia mundial va en aumento. A pesar del gran número de adultos mayores en el Ecuador, la producción de investigación sobre el envejecimiento y las demencias aún es baja en el país. Objetivo: Describir el perfil sociodemográfico y clínico de adultos mayores con demencia de un hospital especializado en Quito-Ecuador. Materiales y métodos: Estudio transversal, descriptivo y analítico, de 96 pacientes con demencia de la unidad de Salud Mental de un hospital en la capital del Ecuador. Para la descripción de las variables cualitativas se utilizaron frecuencias y porcentajes, y para las variables cuantitativas se utilizaron medias y desviaciones estándar. Para determinar la relación entre variables cualitativas se utilizó chi cuadrado. El nivel de significancia estadística Resultados: El 76 de participantes fueron mujeres. Se observó que el 78 de pacientes con demencia tenía una escolaridad 6 años. Además, el 64.6 dependía económicamente de los familiares y el 44 vivía en casa de estos. Las principales comorbilidades fueron hipertensión arterial, sobrepeso/obesidad y diabetes. En la muestra predominó la demencia tipo Alzheimer y los síntomas neuropsiquiátricos más prevalentes fueron: ansiedad, apatía, irritabilidad y depresión. Se encontró que el 95.5 de pacientes estudiados utilizaba psicofármacos y el 35 de los cuidadores tuvo sobrecarga. Conclusión: Se encontraron datos concordantes con otros reportes mundiales sobre las demencias, sin embargo, los aportes de este estudio son relevantes debido a que nos permite tener una perspectiva cultural de las demencias en el Ecuador.
