Políticas públicas de salud bucal en América Latina: Propuestas y desafíos

Introducción: La salud bucal es un reto que se enfrenta a nivel mundial y las políticas públicas de salud aún no contemplan como prioridad una educación dental. Objetivo: describir las propuestas y desafíos de las políticas públicas de salud bucal en América Latina Materiales y métodos: Es de tipo revisión narrativa, y se ha recurrido como bases de datos a Web of Science, Scopus, Proquest, Scielo, PubMed y Ciencia Latina. Resultados: Se evidencia que las PSB en Latinoamérica se orientan más a la atención curativa y restaurativa, descuidando la etapa preventiva, y se mantienen profundas desigualdades en SB, cuyas consecuencias sufren las poblaciones más vulnerables. Las investigaciones analizadas coinciden en que existen desigualdades de atención estomatológica, carencia de odontólogos y servicios preventivos, así como carencias de programas de atención oral desde el nacimiento en América Latina. Conclusiones: Se requiere que la PSB sea una prioridad y se desarrollen estudios epidemiológicos para distinguir causas, factores de riesgo y el estado estomatológico de las regiones, con el desafío centrado en mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas y en la educación dental.
