Abstract

Introduction: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) comprise a group of functional and structural alterations affecting the temporomandibular joint and associated structures. Certain surgical procedures in the oropharyngeal region, such as tonsillectomy, may induce biomechanical changes that predispose patients to the development of these disorders. Objective: To explore the relationship between temporomandibular disorders and tonsillectomy in patients attending the dental service of Rómulo Gallegos University during the 2022–2023 period. Materials and methods: A descriptive field study was conducted under a multiple case report design with a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of two patients with a history of tonsillectomy, who underwent clinical evaluation to identify signs and symptoms associated with temporomandibular disorders. Results: Clinical manifestations consistent with temporomandibular disorders were identified following the surgical intervention, including joint pain and functional limitation. Additionally, the use of stabilization splints contributed to the improvement of symptoms in the evaluated patients. Conclusion: Tonsillectomy may be associated with the development of temporomandibular disorders; therefore, post-surgical dental follow-up is recommended. Stabilization splints represent an effective therapeutic option for managing these conditions.
