Abstract

Introduction: Interculturality is a fundamental approach in nursing care for pregnant women in Ecuador, given the influence of cultural diversity on practices and beliefs related to pregnancy and childbirth. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze interculturality in nursing services for pregnant women in Ecuador, considering the integration of traditional knowledge and the biomedical model. Material and methods: A systematic review with a qualitative approach was conducted, following the PRISMA statement, by searching for articles in databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and SciELO, considering publications from 2021 to 2026. Fifteen studies were selected for analysis. Results: The results show that 60.0% of the studies report intercultural practices such as the involvement of traditional midwives, the use of ancestral medicine, upright childbirth, and family support. However, 73.3% of the studies identified structural barriers and 66.7% identified sociocultural barriers, highlighting the predominance of the biomedical model, the lack of intercultural training among healthcare personnel, and limitations in the organization of services. Conclusion: It is concluded that the implementation of an intercultural approach in nursing care promotes more humanized, equitable, and culturally relevant maternal care. However, its consolidation in Ecuador requires strengthening the training of healthcare personnel and adapting the health services to sociocultural realities and promoting the institutionalization of this approach within the health system.
