Abstract

Introduction: Arterial hypertension is one of the most frequent public health problems in society worldwide. In Ecuador, there are a large
number of people with arterial hypertension this is due to various factors such as: aging, inadequate eating habits, such as the intake
of food with high levels of sugar, salt and fat, alcohol intake, tobacco consumption, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, socioeconomic factors, age,
sex, race. Objective: To study the arterial hypertension main risk factors in adults 40 to 60 years old in Ecuador. Methodology: It is a
study with a non-experimental methodological design, with a descriptive and transversal level. The data to carry out the study was extracted from the national health and nutrition survey conducted by Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (INEC). Development: The persons’ lifestyle is one of the main factors that increases hypertension. According to the study that family history, male or female sex, can be a risk factor for people to suffer this disease. Obesity also favors the appearance of arterial hypertension. Conclusions: According to the results of the study, alcoholism, tobacco, inadequate fat intake, salt, lack of physical activity, among others, favor this disease. In addition, the age predominates as a risk factor.
