Meaning of male nursing students' experiences of procedures for women in their formative practice

Introduction: Nursing is a scientific discipline that coexists with other health professions within the healthcare field, where teamwork is essential due to the demand for interprofessional collaboration. Objective: To explore the experiences of male nursing students when providing care to women through specific procedures during their clinical training. Materials and Methods: A qualitative narrative-based study was conducted using the focus group technique. Ten male nursing students were interviewed to explore their experiences, and the most representative narratives were selected for analysis.
Results: The procedures the students faced included: assistance with Leopold's maneuvers, breastfeeding counseling, cervical cytology sampling, and counseling on family planning methods. In response to these procedures, students reported experiencing uncertainty, anxiety, isolation, and fear. Conclusions: It is essential for higher education institutions to take action in response to this phenomenon, as it may lead to various negative consequences for those involved, potentially hindering their professional development and leading to dropout from the nursing program.
