Abstract

Efficient management of research and development (R&D) projects poses a challenge for higher technological education institutes due to the lack of standardized models that integrate the planning, execution, monitoring, and evaluation of research activities. The objective of this research was to design and analyze the implementation feasibility of the Comprehensive Research Project Management Model (MIGPI)—based on PMBOK and adapted to the context of Ecuadorian technological institutes. A mixed-methods study was conducted, featuring a descriptive-propositive scope and a non-experimental design. The sample consisted of 241 students and 48 faculty members from the *Instituto Superior Tecnológico de Formación Profesional Administrativa y Comercial*. Data collection involved document analysis, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and questionnaires validated through expert judgment and a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.81. Results revealed strengths regarding staff methodological training (75%) and high interest in participating in research activities (99%), alongside weaknesses related to limited student participation in R&D projects (58%) and the absence of standardized management procedures. The feasibility analysis confirmed favorable conditions for implementing the MIGPI across operational, technical, social, and institutional dimensions. It is concluded that adopting a PMBOK-based management model serves as a useful tool that could strengthen research processes, improve institutional governance, and foster greater alignment between applied research and the needs of the productive sector.
