Academic Dishonesty in Postgraduate Studies as a Multilevel Phenomenon: A Theoretical-Integrative Review

Academic dishonesty in graduate education should not be understood merely as a poor personal decision or as an isolated episode in students’ academic trajectories. In this article, it is approached as a multilevel phenomenon shaped by personal, educational, institutional, editorial, technological, and governance-related factors. The topic was addressed through an integrative theoretical review, supported by a systematized bibliographic search and an adapted PRISMA flow, which helped ensure the traceability of the review process. Through the stages of identification, screening, prioritization, retrieval, and eligibility assessment, 36 studies were included in the final synthesis. The findings were organized around three analytical axes: factors associated with academic dishonesty in graduate education; emerging practices related to generative artificial intelligence, authorship, and pressure to publish; and responses focused on the governance of academic integrity. The analysis suggests that the problem emerges from the interaction between limited research training, weak writing and citation practices, unclear uses of generative technologies, pressure to publish, and the exploitation of still-fragile institutional policies. From this analysis, there is an urgent need to move towards educational and co-responsible models that have the capacity to articulate supervision, academic literacy, transparency in authorship, technological regulation and a more concrete institutional culture of integrity.
