The persistence of rural poverty in the Peruvian Andes highlights the need to identify activities capable of revitalizing local subsistence economies. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the tourism economy and the rural economy in the district of San Pedro de Cachora (Apurimac, Peru) during 2022. A quantitative approach was adopted, with a correlational scope and a non-experimental cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 290 members of the economically active population, selected through probability sampling. Two Likert-type questionnaires with adequate reliability were administered, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.838 for the tourism economy and 0.935 for the rural economy, and the data were analyzed using Spearman's correlation coefficient. The results showed a positive, very high, and statistically significant correlation between both variables, with a Spearman's rho coefficient of 0.901 and a p value lower than 0.01. By dimensions, the rural economy was significantly associated with community benefits, with a rho coefficient of 0.857; prices of goods and services, with 0.740; income and opportunities, with 0.739; local businesses, with 0.720; and investment, with 0.709. All these relationships showed high or very high intensity. Likewise, a weaker but significant relationship was found with standard of living, with a rho coefficient of 0.318. It is concluded that tourism operates as a catalyst for rural development, although its effect on structural living conditions is lower than its effect on immediate economic flows, which requires strategic planning to ensure an equitable distribution of benefits.
