Abstract

Understanding how those responsible for micro and small enterprises (MSEs) perceive external conditions makes it possible to characterize the context in which they carry out their commercial activities. The objective of the study was to describe the perception of owners and managers regarding the political, economic, sociocultural, technological, ecological, and legal dimensions of the business environment of commercial MSEs in Andahuaylas, Apurimac, Peru. A quantitative, basic, and descriptive study was conducted using a non-experimental design and a single measurement. The probabilistic sample consisted of 368 owners or managers. A 29-item questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale was administered. Content validity reached an overall Aiken's V of 0.92, while internal consistency, assessed using Cronbach's alpha, ranged from 0.76 to 0.84 across the dimensions. Scores were classified into low, medium, and high levels using cut-off points established from the theoretical range. The economic dimension showed the highest proportion at the high level, with 74.7 percent, followed by the legal dimension, with 70.1 percent; the technological dimension, with 65.2 percent; and the political dimension, with 62.2 percent. The sociocultural and ecological dimensions showed more balanced distributions between the medium and high levels. The findings provide a baseline description of perceptions of the business environment among the MSEs studied and, given the descriptive scope of the study, do not allow causal relationships or effects on business performance to be established.
