Abstract

This study examined how academic self-regulation and postponement of activities were associated with academic stress among psychology students at a private university in Huancayo, Peru. A quantitative, correlational, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 250 students. Participants completed the Academic Procrastination Scale (EPA-12) and the SISCO SV-21 Academic Stress Inventory. Following the Peruvian validation of the EPA-12, its dimensions were analyzed separately as continuous scores. Moderate stress was the most frequent category (57.2%). Self-regulation was weakly and inversely associated with total stress (rho = -0.366; 95% CI [-0.480, -0.238]; p < .001), whereas postponement showed a moderate positive association (rho = 0.487; 95% CI [0.380, 0.586]; p < .001). Associations with stressors, symptoms, and coping remained significant after Holm adjustment. Stronger self-regulation co-occurred with lower stress, while greater postponement co-occurred with higher stress. Because the study was cross-sectional, the findings indicate association rather than causation.
