Relationship between social skills and resilience in university students from a private university in Huancayo, Peru

The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between social skills and resilience in university students from a private university in Huancayo Peru. The research followed a quantitative approach of a basic type with a correlational scope and a non experimental cross sectional design. The sample consisted of 200 university students to whom the Social Skills Scale and the Resilience Scale were applied. The results showed that 49 percent of the students presented a medium level of social skills and 39 percent a low level while resilience was concentrated at very low levels 34 percent and low levels 31 percent. At the inferential level a weak but statistically significant positive relationship was found between social skills and resilience rho equals 0.156 p equals 0.027. Likewise a significant relationship was observed with the dimensions of confidence and feeling good alone p equals 0.002 and perseverance p equals 0.005 while no significant relationship was found with equanimity and self acceptance. It is concluded that social skills constitute a factor associated with resilience although their influence is limited which suggests the need for joint intervention with other psychosocial factors.
