Abstract

Mental health is a major concern among prison populations due to the conditions associated with incarceration, which may contribute to the development of psychopathological symptoms and impair interpersonal relationships. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between interpersonal attachment and psychopathological symptoms in incarcerated individuals from a correctional facility in Huancayo, Peru, during 2026. A quantitative, correlational, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of 331 incarcerated individuals selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Data were collected using the VINCULATEST to assess interpersonal attachment and the Brief Symptom List (LSB-50) to evaluate psychopathological symptoms. The findings revealed a moderate, positive, and statistically significant relationship between interpersonal attachment and psychopathological symptoms (r = .618; p < .001). Disorganized attachment showed the strongest associations with overall psychopathological symptoms, whereas secure attachment showed weaker associations. In addition, high and very high levels of psychopathological symptoms predominated, particularly in sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, hostility, and psychoreactivity. It is concluded that difficulties in interpersonal attachment are associated with greater psychological distress among incarcerated individuals, highlighting the need to strengthen psychological interventions aimed at promoting secure interpersonal relationships as part of mental health strategies within correctional settings.
